For instance, in some industries, there is a prevailing belief that working through discomfort or pain is a sign of dedication and commitment, which can exacerbate ergonomic risks.  There has been a steady rise in musculoskeletal illnesses related to incorrect workstation configuration. These include, but are not limited to: cervical disk problems, lower back pains, carpal tunnel syndrome, eye problems and others. Furthermore, the adoption of Standing Desks hasn’t really taken hold in Thailand. Personally, I swear by them.

Not only does it reduce the incidence of work-related injuries and illnesses, but it also enhances employee morale and productivity. In Thailand, occupational safety and health are governed by various laws and regulations, including the Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment Act. These regulations outline the responsibilities of employers in ensuring the safety and well-being of their employees, including the implementation of ergonomic measures. As an HSE Manager, it is crucial to stay informed about these regulations and ensure compliance within the organization. In 2023, Thailand’s Labour Department are introducing a new Work from Home bill. This is the country’s first legislation governing remote work relationships between employers and employees so look ahead and consider how your “work from home” people have their work environments set up for ergonomics.

For example, in one manufacturing facility I worked with, we conducted a thorough ergonomic assessment and implemented ergonomic workstations and tools, resulting in a significant reduction in worker fatigue and injuries. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of witnessing the transformative impact of ergonomic interventions in various workplaces. From manufacturing plants to office settings, organizations that prioritize ergonomics have experienced tangible improvements in safety, productivity, and employee satisfaction ( and less trips to the doctor). For instance, in a company I worked with, implementing ergonomic chairs and adjustable monitor arms resulted in a notable decrease in employee absenteeism due to musculoskeletal issues. More work needs to be done though.

Additionally, addressing ergonomic issues in informal sectors and small businesses remains a significant challenge that requires concerted efforts from stakeholders at all levels. Time will tell but, if companies begin to calculate lost time or lost efficiency due to ergonomic injury, they might find it beneficial to business operations (and duty of care to employees) to take measures to reduce this risk.
